What is a CSCS Card?
CSCS cards play a vital role in the construction industry. Given their importance, most construction companies expect all employees to hold a CSCS card. Therefore, you should ensure you possess a CSCS card before applying for any construction-related position.CSCS cards are used to identify different types of workers in the construction industry. The card scheme an individual applies for is dependent on their capabilities, experience, and trade or occupation. There is a range of CSCS cards available, which are aligned to a vast array of disciplines and job roles. So, whether you’re a trainee at the beginning of your career or an established site manager with decades of experience, there is an appropriate CSCS card for you.
Each card has an accompanying set of qualifying requirements. To successfully apply for any card, you must meet all of its qualifying requirements within the stipulated timeframe. These include completing certain training modules, passing assessments, and gaining workplace experience. The difficulty level of a card’s qualifying criteria is index-linked to the seniority/complexity of the jobs it represents. For example, if you aspire to progress into a managerial role, you’ll need to navigate a significant number of courses and examinations.

Who are the CSCS?
Established in 1995, the CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) is the leading skills certification scheme within the construction industry. It is a subsidiary organisation of the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board), which operates as a regulatory body. The CITB aims to improve standards across the construction industry. It does this by setting guidelines regarding best work practices, conducting research and developing new technologies, and ensuring testing criteria for industry-based assessments are suitably challenging.
There are several sub-groups within the over-arching CSCS framework. These sub-groups represent various trades and sectors within the construction industry. For example, JIB-PMES (Joint Industry Board for Plumbing, Mechanical Engineering Services) supports the plumbing trade, whilst the CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) is accountable for the plant sector. Many of these organisations facilitate their own version of the CSCS card programme. In the case of the examples outlined above, there is a dedicated blue skilled workers card for JIB-registered plumbers and three CPCS-specific cards.
The CSCS test
The CSCS test is designed to assess whether an individual has sufficient health and safety knowledge to perform a particular job role. There are three different assessments in the CSCS testing series. Listed in ascending order from easiest to most difficult, these are as follows: the operatives, specialists, and managers & professionals (MAP) tests. Please note that an employer, tutor, or colleague may refer to the CSCS test as the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test.
All three assessments consist of 50 multiple-choice questions and must be completed within a 45-minute timeframe. The pass score for the operatives and specialists tests is 90% (45 out of 50). However, if you’re sitting the managers & professionals test, you’ll need to answer at least 46 (92%) questions correctly to pass.
Passing a relevant CSCS test forms part of the qualifying requirements for every CSCS card. The specific CSCS test you will take is entirely dependent on the type of CSCS card you are applying for. The more challenging your card’s general qualifying requirements are, the more likely it is that you’ll sit for one of the more difficult CSCS tests.
Further details
The operatives test is taken by members of the general workforce, such as trainees, labourers, and skilled workers. Site supervisors will be expected to sit the specialists assessment, as will those operating in roles that require an extremely high level of technical expertise. There are twelve different versions of the specialists test. The version you will need to pass is contingent on your occupation and the CSCS card you are targeting. For example, a candidate applying for a supervisor card would tackle the supervisory module of the specialists test, whilst the working at height assessment is most appropriate for an aerial/satellite installer.
As its name implies, the managers & professionals test (commonly referred to as the ‘MAPs’ test) is pitched at current and aspiring site managers and senior leaders. This assessment includes questions that focus on the topics covered in the operatives and specialists tests but also quizzes candidates on several advanced themes.
When taking the MAPs test, you’ll be asked about the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations. This important piece of legislation was introduced in 2015. The CDM Regulations stipulate that all employers must establish safe workplace environments for their employees. As a site manager plays a fundamental role in delivering this objective, you’ll be expected to articulate how you would reduce the risk of your team members incurring an injury in the workplace.
There will also be questions that attempt to examine your leadership credentials. You’ll be presented with several different scenarios you may encounter whilst managing a construction site, and asked to select an appropriate response. The correct answer will be the one that shows an appreciation of how the outlined hazards cause a potential risk to employee safety, and what decisive action can be taken to mitigate these threats.
The two-year rule
To acquire any CSCS card, you must pass the CSCS test within the two years leading up to your application date. This is the case when submitting your original application, and if you choose to renew your membership to any CSCS card programme.
Types of CSCS cards
As we’ve already alluded to, there are a significant number of CSCS cards in circulation. In the following section, we’ll examine each type of CSCS card. Our analysis provides information regarding qualifying criteria, validity periods, renewal requirements, associated costs, and typical applicant profiles.
N.B. All CSCS cards, regardless of their status or what scheme they represent, cost £36 to purchase (and renew). All three versions of the CSCS test are priced at £22.50
Red CSCS cards
There are six different versions of the red CSCS card. All of these cards are used by individuals currently enrolled in training programmes. The type of red CSCS card you apply for is dependent on your employment status, your workplace experience, and the training courses and activities you are undertaking.
The validity period of the card is determined by how long it typically takes for individuals to complete the required training. At the end of this period, you will be unable to renew your CSCS red card. This is because the CSCS expects you to navigate all training tasks within the stipulated timeframe. If you’ve completed all your training, you no longer need a trainee card!
Provisional card
Who owns this type of CSCS card?
The provisional card is used by individuals during a probationary period with a construction company. This is very much an ‘entry-point’ card, supporting an individual’s first step into the industry.
Probationary periods can be advantageous for both employer and employee. Employers can judge whether a candidate has the potential to fulfil a particular role, whilst the employee familiarizes themselves with the demands of a construction site. If both stakeholders have a positive experience, a more permanent employment option can be agreed upon.
What are the card’s qualifying requirements?
You must not have previously held any other CSCS card. Therefore, if you successfully apply for a provisional card, it will be the first CSCS card you own. You must have passed the CSCS operatives test within the two years leading up to the date of your application.
When will my card expire?
The validity period of the provisional card is six months. The CSCS deems this to be a sufficient timeframe for both the employer and employee to decide whether continued employment is a suitable option. The length of probationary periods does vary, but most employers set this between three and six months.
Can I renew my card?
As per all red CSCS cards, you cannot renew your provisional card.
What costs do I need to account for?
Employees conducting probationary periods have exactly the same statutory rights as any other worker. Therefore, you will be paid a wage/salary throughout this time. Until your employer decides whether to hire you in a permanent capacity, you’ll likely need to pay for any training you wish to complete. If your probationary period is successful, your employer may decide to support you by subsidising some/all future training costs. CSCS Test: £22.50.
Apprentice card
Who owns this type of CSCS card?
As the title suggests, the apprentice card is reserved for those participating in apprenticeship schemes.
What are the card’s qualifying requirements?
Your apprenticeship scheme must be sponsored by an employer or approved by an authorised institution. To prove that this is the case, you’ll need to upload a completed Enrolment Evidence Form during the card application process. You must have passed the CSCS operatives test within the two years leading up to the date of your application.
When will my card expire?
The validity period of the red apprentice card is four years and six months. Apprenticeship schemes differ in length depending on the trade/discipline they are associated with. However, a period of four years and six months should be long enough to comfortably complete any construction-related apprenticeship.
Can I renew my card?
As per all red CSCS cards, you cannot renew your apprentice card.
What costs do I need to account for?
One of the main benefits of any apprenticeship scheme is that your employer/sponsor covers all or most of your training costs. As you’ll technically be employed throughout your scheme, you’ll also receive a salary as per any other worker. Although this salary will be relatively modest as you’ll still technically be in training, the fact that you’ll ‘earn as you learn’ is a major advantage. CSCS Test: £22.50
Industrial Placement card
Who owns this type of CSCS card?
This card is for individuals who must conduct a work placement as part of a construction-related qualification or training scheme. If you’re applying for an industrial placement card, you would be typically undertaking a T-Level course.
What are the card’s qualifying requirements?
The training course you are attending must require you to gain at least 30 days of workplace experience. To demonstrate this, you’ll need to fill out an Enrolment Evidence Form and attach it to your application. You must have passed the CSCS operatives test within the two years leading up to the date of your application
When will my card expire?
The validity period of the industrial placement card is three years. As most industry placements last around twelve months, this provides more than ample time to complete your secondment.
Can I renew my card?
As per all red CSCS cards, you cannot renew your industrial placement card.
What costs do I need to account for?
T-Level fees are dependent on your personal circumstances. The government will cover your course costs if you are aged between 16 and 19 years old and haven’t entered alternative post-16 education. CSCS Test: £22.50
Experienced Worker card
Who owns this type of CSCS card?
If you’ve held a position in the construction industry for some time but have recently pursued a NVQ/SVQ (Scotland) Level 2, this is the correct card for you. Although part of the red training card programme, the experienced worker card demonstrates that you are already competent in your field.
What are the card’s qualifying requirements?
Provide proof of your registration to an NVQ/SVQ Level 2 course. Please note that you must have registered for your course at some stage in the preceding two years. You must have passed the CSCS operatives test within the two years leading up to the date of your application.
When will my card expire?
The validity period of the experienced worker card is twelve months. Even if you’re conducting your NVQ/SVQ Level 2 course on a part-time basis, this provides more than enough time to earn your qualification.
Can I renew my card?
As per all red CSCS cards, you cannot renew your experienced worker card.
What costs do I need to account for?
The cost of an NVQ/SVQ Level 2 course is dependent on the discipline it relates to and the learning provider delivering your training. Prices can fluctuate between approximately £500-£1000, so it’s worth researching your options before committing to a course. You should also check whether your employer is in a position to subsidise your training costs, or if you are eligible for a government grant. CSCS Test: £22.50
Experienced Technical, Supervisor, or Manager card
Who owns this type of CSCS card?
This card is designed for those with extensive construction industry experience who are attending an NVQ/SVQ (Scotland) Level 3 course. Owners of this card will be targeting a supervisory, advanced craft, or managerial position, aware that an NVQ Level 3 qualification will support their application for such roles.
What are the card’s qualifying requirements?
Provide proof of your registration to an NVQ/SVQ Level 3 course. Please note that you must have registered for your course at some stage in the two years before the date of your experienced worker card application. If you’re hoping to fulfil a technical or supervisory role, you will need to pass the relevant module of the CSCS specialists test. If you’re targeting a managerial position, you must pass the MAPs test.
When will my card expire?
The validity period of the experienced technical, supervisor, or manager card is three years. Even if you’re conducting your NVQ/SVQ Level 2 course on a part-time basis, this provides more than enough time to earn your qualification.
Can I renew my card?
As per all red CSCS cards, you cannot renew your experienced technical, supervisor, or manager card.
What costs do I need to account for?
The cost of an NVQ/SVQ Level 3 course is dependent on the discipline it relates to and the learning provider delivering your training. Prices can fluctuate between approximately £1000-£1750, so it’s worth researching your options before committing to a course. You should also check whether your employer is in a position to subsidise your training costs, or if you are eligible for a government grant. CSCS Test: £22.50
Trainee card
Who owns this type of CSCS card?
Any person currently navigating a construction-related course. As this could be an academic, vocational, or professional qualification, those in possession of a trainee card may also qualify for a different CSCS card. However, you are only allowed to be part of one CSCS membership programme at any given time.
What are the card’s qualifying requirements?
Provide proof of registration to your course. If you’re applying for a trainee card due to undertaking a vocational qualification, you must have registered for this course within the two years leading up to your application date. The CSCS test you will need to pass is entirely dependent on the CSCS card you are applying for.
When will my card expire?
The validity period of the trainee card is five years. This provides more than enough time to complete any training qualification.
Can I renew my card?
As per all red CSCS cards, you cannot renew your trainee card
What costs do I need to account for?
As alluded to in previous sections, training courses vary depending on complexity, area of focus, and the facilitating learning provider. Again, it’s worth checking to see whether your employer can help pay for training costs, or if you qualify for any sort of government funding. CSCS Test: £22.50
Green CSCS card (Labourer card)
The Green CSCS card is often referred to as the labourer card. As this programme is designed for unskilled workers, you shouldn’t apply for this card if you are currently employed in a skilled occupation.
Who owns this type of CSCS card?
Individuals working as labourers on a construction site. Many individuals attend technical training courses whilst in possession of a green card, as they hope to move into skilled worker positions in the future.
What are the card’s qualifying requirements?
All applicants must achieve one of the following health and safety qualifications:
- The Level 1 (Scotland Level 4) Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment
- The Scottish Level 5 REHIS Elementary Health and Safety Certificate
- The NOCN/CSkills Awards Construction Health and Safety (F/618/0738) module
- A CSCS-approved alternate qualification. Click here to find the full list of options.
You’ll also need to have passed the CSCS operatives test within the two years leading up to the date of your application.
When will my card expire?
The validity period of the labourer card is five years.
Can I renew my card?
You will not be able to renew your green CSCS card at the end of its five-year validation period. This is because a significant proportion of labourer cardholders move onto different CSCS card programmes, having completed training courses before the expiry of their membership. If you wish to continue working as a labourer/unskilled worker after five years, you should re-apply for the green CSCS card programme from scratch.
What costs do I need to account for?
The cost of acquiring one of the required health and safety certificates depends on the course you take and the learning provider you use. However, a good estimate would be around the £100 mark. CSCS Test: £22.50
Blue CSCS card (Skilled worker card)
The blue CSCS card is used by skilled workers operating in a vast range of roles. The type of blue CSCS card you own is therefore dependent on the skills and knowledge you have, and the trade in which you work. As previously mentioned, subsidiary organisations such as the JIB-PMES and CPCS have their own internal schemes which are linked to the wider CSCS card framework.
Who owns this type of CSCS card?
Individuals who have been trained to safely perform specific technical tasks on either a construction site or in another appropriate environment. Only skilled workers may possess this card.
What are the card’s qualifying requirements?
You must have a construction-related NVQ/SVQ (Scotland) Level 2 qualification. This course should relate directly to your chosen discipline/trade. You’ll also need to have passed the CSCS operatives test within the two years leading up to the date of your application.
When will my card expire?
The validity period of the skilled worker card is five years.
Can I renew my card?

White CSCS card
There are two types of white CSCS cards; the Academically Qualified Person (AQP) and Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) cards. Most individuals that own these cards later apply for either a gold or black CSCS card.
Who owns this type of CSCS card?
Although technically classed as ‘training’ cards, white CSCS cardholders already have strong theoretical and practical knowledge. However, most have limited (or zero) workplace experience. AQP cardholders have obtained an advanced academic certificate (such as a degree/NEBOSH diploma/HND), whilst those that possess PQP cards have been accepted as members of an accredited professional body.
What are the card’s qualifying requirements?
AQP cardholders must provide evidence of any relevant qualifications. PQP cardholders need to prove they’re a registered member of an accredited professional body. Whether applying for an AQP or PQP card, you must pass the CSCS managers and professionals test within the two years leading up to the date of your application.
When will my card expire?
Both versions of the white CSCS card are valid for five years.
Can I renew my card?
No, you cannot renew either white CSCS card at the end of their respective validation periods. This is because the CSCS expects that white cardholders have completed the relevant training to progress to other card programmes within the allocated five-year timeframe.
What costs do I need to account for?
AQP cardholders: Moving onto higher education is often a financially demanding endeavour. Degree courses are expensive, and you may not have source of income for the duration of your studies. However, some employers may offer to cover costs as part of a sponsorship programme. Alternatively, you may be entitled to a government grant.
PQP card holders: You’ll have to pay a monthly/annual membership fee to remain a member of your chosen professional body.
CSCS Test: £22.50
Black CSCS card (Manager card)
The black CSCS card possesses the most challenging set of qualifying requirements. It is often referred to as the ‘manager card’

Black CSCS cards are used by individuals performing high-level leadership roles, such as site managers, project managers, and building control officers. These workers are usually experienced, technically proficient, and skilled leaders.
What are the card’s qualifying requirements?
You must have a construction-related NVQ/SVQ (Scotland) Level 4 qualification (or higher). This course should relate directly to your chosen discipline/trade. You’ll also need to have passed the CSCS managers and professionals test within the two years leading up to the date of your application.
When will my card expire?
The manager card is valid for five years.
Can I renew my card?
Yes, you can renew your black CSCS card at the end of its validation period. You must pass the CSCS managers and professionals test within the two years leading up to your renewal application.
What costs do I need to account for?
The cost of an NVQ/SVQ Level 4 course is dependent on the discipline it relates to and the learning provider delivering your training. Prices can fluctuate between approximately £1,250 – £2,500, so it’s worth researching your options before committing to a course. You should also check whether your employer is in a position to subsidise your training costs, or if you are eligible for a government grant.
