Whats is the CSCS Test for managers and professionals?
The CSCS managers and professionals test is a health and safety-based assessment used in the construction industry. It is part of the CSCS test series and plays an important role in the CSCS card application process. The acronym ‘MAPs’ is sometimes used when referring to this test. It’s also worth noting that your employer or tutor may refer to the CSCS test series as the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test.
There are two other exams in this series; the operatives and specialists tests. All three tests have been put in place to determine whether a construction worker has the required level of health and safety knowledge to deliver a specific role on a construction site. The managers and professionals test is the most difficult out of these three assessments. This is because it is designed to assess those either targeting or currently occupying high-ranking job roles. The more responsibility an individual has, the more informed they must be on health and safety matters.
In this article, we’ll discuss everything you’ll need to know about the CSCS managers and professionals test. This includes providing information about the content and structure of the assessment, and its close relationship with the CSCS card programme. Furthermore, we’ll explain how to book your test, offer some top revision and preparation tips, and talk through the details of any relevant costs.
At the end of this article, we’ve provided a free mock test. The questions included are reflective of the ones you’ll face in the CSCS managers and professionals test. Therefore, you’ll be able to gain an accurate insight into the look and feel of the actual exam paper by completing this assessment.
The CSCS Card
To successfully apply for any CSCS card, you must pass an appropriate CSCS test. Those applying for either a black or white CSCS card must pass the managers and professionals test.
The vast majority of employers mandate that all site managers and senior leaders must own a black CSCS card. As a result, many people in this industry refer to this as the ‘managers’ card.
If you are either a member of an accredited professional body or have a degree (or equivalent qualification) in a construction-related discipline but haven’t yet been employed in an on-site role, you’ll likely apply for a white CSCS card. There are two white CSCS cards available; the Professionally Qualified Peoples (PQP) and Academically Qualified Peoples (PQP) cards. You should apply for a PQP card if you are a member of a professional body, and an AQP card if you hold a degree (or other advanced-level certification).
Why do employers want their staff to hold CSCS cards?
Ensuring all employees possess appropriate CSCS cards is beneficial to construction companies for several reasons. As a consequence, you should ensure you own a CSCS before attempting to secure employment in the construction industry.
In addition to providing reassurance that all staff members are suitably qualified to perform the required tasks, it also reduces the risk of injury in the workplace. To pass the CSCS test (regardless of which exam you take) and subsequently acquire a CSCS card, you need to have a high level of health and safety knowledge. Therefore, you’ll understand how to conduct tasks in a way that doesn’t compromise the safety of others.
Furthermore, it enables employers to demonstrate adherence to a range of regulatory requirements. This includes legislation such as the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, which determines that employers must establish a safe workplace environment for their employees. By ensuring that all workers have been trained to safely and compliantly deliver their on-site role, construction companies can demonstrate they’ve made a genuine effort to meet this requirement.
Content and structure of the assessment
The CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) determines what topics will be included in the CSCS managers and professionals test. This is because the CITB is responsible for setting standards across the construction industry, and ensuring that all workers and employers follow an agreed set of technical and health & safety principles. As a result, the CITB will occasionally alter testing content and criteria to ‘reflect changes to legislation, working practices, and new technology’ The most recent significant update was introduced in June 2023.
Focus areas
As per the operatives and specialists CSCS tests, the managers and professionals assessment is loosely based on the following five key focus areas:
- Working environment
- Occupational health
- Safety
- High-risk activities
- Specialist
However, these three tests are differentiated by the level of detail they cover. Whilst the operatives test assesses more general health and safety knowledge, the specialists test asks candidates to provide detailed compliance information on a specific discipline. The theme (discipline) of the specialist test you take will depend on the job role you have, and the CSCS card you are applying for. For example, a hoist installer would sit the Working at Height module of the specialists test.
The full list of disciplines used in specialists tests is provided below (industry codes in brackets):
- Supervisory (SUP)
- Demolition (DEM)
- Plumbing (JIB-PLUM)
- Highway works (HIW)
- Working at height (WAH)
- Lifts and escalators (LAEE)
- Tunnelling (TUNN)
- HVACR: Heating and plumbing services (HAPS)
- HVACR: Pipefitting and welding (PFW)
- HVACR: Ductwork (DUCT)
- HVACR: Refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAAC)
- HVACE: Service and facilities maintenance (SAF)
MAPs specific content
The MAP’s exam covers a cross-section of the content included in both of the other two assessments, but requires candidates to have a firmer grasp of the subject matter. In addition to this, you’ll also need to answer a series of advanced questions relating to three other topics. These topics are as follows: the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, Demolition, and Highway Works.
Questions regarding the CDM Regulations will centre around how they are used and enforced, and the potential consequences of not meeting the guidelines set out in this legislation. The questions included in the Demolition and Highway Works section of this assessment will be notably more difficult than those present in the corresponding modules of the specialists test.
Lastly, you’ll also be expected to demonstrate you have the required leadership qualities to manage a construction site. You’ll be presented with several different scenarios that a site supervisor/manager may experience, and are required to confirm what you think is the most appropriate course of action when responding. This part of the test is designed to assess whether you can act swiftly and decisively to address a challenging set of circumstances. This is because black CSCS card holders need to be authoritative figures with good management skills.
Testing format
As per the operatives and specialists versions, the MAPs test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. These questions are split into two categories: theoretical knowledge (38 questions) and behavioural case studies (12 questions).
The theoretical questions are focused on technical principles and safety regulation. Your knowledge regarding these topics will come from studying textbooks and participating in classroom discussions with tutors and peers.
The behavioural case studies are used to understand how you would react to different ‘real-world’ scenarios in the workplace. Examples of situations that present a safety risk will be given, and you’ll need to decide the best way to respond. Please note that some of these questions will test your managerial credentials (in similarity to the leadership section of the assessment discussed in the previous section), whilst others are more about general health & safety awareness on a construction site (as per the operatives and specialists tests).
Timings and pass threshold
You have 45 minutes to complete this examination. Clearly, this means that you’ll have less than one minute per question to provide your answer. Although this is a relatively tight timeframe, most candidates have no issue answering all 50 questions within the allotted 45 minutes. Therefore, please do not feel as if you need to rush your responses.
To pass the CSCS managers and professionals test, you’ll need to answer at least 46 questions correctly. Therefore, the pass mark for this assessment is 92%. This differs from the operatives and specialists tests, whereby delegates only need to score 90% (provide 45 correct answers) to pass. As a result, the MAPs test is more challenging than the others in more than one way.
However, don’t worry too much if you fail to pass first time. You’ll be able to take this test as many times as required. In the unfortunate event you do fail, you’ll just need to wait at least 24 hours before attempting to re-book your test.
Some top tips for passing the MAPs test
The key to passing any assessment – whether that’s a CSCS test or otherwise – is preparation. If you put in the necessary work, there’s a far better chance you’ll achieve the result you want.
As well as knowing your stuff, it’s important that you’re able to manage your emotions. Given the pressures involved, taking an exam can be a stressful activity. As everyone performs at their best when feeling calm and relaxed, it’s in your interest to approach your test in the right frame of mind. Therefore, you should focus appropriately on your mental preparation.
As you’re taking an assessment pitched at an extremely capable target audience, you’ll likely have already proven yourself to have outstanding health and safety knowledge. Therefore, you should enter this exam feeling confident, and ready to take on the challenge.
In the notes below, we’ve provided five top tips for passing the MAPs test:
1. Make a revision timetable
As you’ve already read, the MAPs test covers a large breadth of content. Therefore, you’ll want to make sure you revise every area before sitting this exam. Make a clear timetable that details when you’ll revise each topic, ensuring you allow time for breaks and recreational activity.
2. Think about your preferred learning style
Different students respond to different learning styles. You may be a visual learner who likes to see information presented in diagrams, or an auditory learner who prefers to listen to tutors and engage in classroom discussion. How do you learn best?
3. Use the revision materials available to you
The CITB’s GT200 textbook contains every possible piece of information that may be included in the CSCS managers and professionals test. This is available across several different platforms. Please ensure you purchase the latest version of this textbook (V10), as this reflects the June 2023 updates.
A paperback and PC download of the GT200 textbook can be purchased for £12.00 and £12.25 respectively from the CITB online shop.
You also have the option of downloading the CITB’s MAPs revision app. As well as covering all relevant technical information, this application also contains a mock test function. It can be purchased for £6.99 from both the Google Play and Apple App stores.
Both PC download and revision applications receive automatic updates each time the CITB adjusts assessment content or testing criteria. Although you’ll need to take the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test every time you come to renew/apply for a CSCS card, you’ll only need to purchase this digital textbook once throughout your construction industry career.
4. Read every part of the question, and always provide an answer!
As alluded to earlier, it’s really important to take your time when reading the question. Sometimes, you may need to provide more than one answer or say what course of action you wouldn’t (rather than would) take.
You should also strive to offer an answer to every single question. The multiple-choice format ensures that you have at least a one-in-four chance of selecting the correct answer. Therefore, it’s well worth providing an educated guess if you’re unsure! An extra one or two points could be the difference between passing and failing this test.
5. Practice makes perfect!
We would encourage you to take as many mock tests as possible. You should try to replicate the exam conditions you’ll experience at the test centre when conducting these tests. This will give you the best insight into how you’ll feel when taking the actual exam, and therefore give you a solid platform for preparation. Therefore, complete the test in silence, with no revision notes to hand, and within the 45-minute time limit.
What does the booking process entail?
There are several ways to book your CSCS managers and professionals test, but the easiest is via the CSCS online service. To do this, you must register for a Pearson VUE account, which you can do when visiting the CITB’s website. Once registered, you’ll instantly be able to make your booking.
If you would prefer to book your test over the phone, you can do so by contacting the CITB booking team on 0344 994 4488 (if you’re located in Wales, please call 0344 994 490). Lines are open from 8.00am – 8.00pm between Monday and Friday and from 8.00am – 12.00pm on Saturdays. Lines are closed on Sundays.
When booking through either of the above methods, you’ll take your test at a Pearson VUE test centre. However, you can also sit your exam at a CITB-approved Internet Test Centre (ITC). To do this, you’ll need to manage your booking directly with your local ITC. The full list of CITB-approved Internet Test Centres is available via this link.
How much does it cost to take the CSCS managers and professionals test
Providing you book your test through the CITB, you will pay £22.50.
If you’re taking this test as part of a training module or NVQ qualification, your learning provider may offer to book this test on your behalf. In this scenario, you may be charged more. As the booking process is quite simple, we would recommend you avoid any unnecessary fees by organizing your test yourself.
If you need to re-sit the exam, you’ll have to pay the £22.50 fee again (and on each subsequent occasion).
What do I bring with me to the test centre?
Please ensure you bring a valid form of ID to the test centre. This can be a passport, driving licence, or biometric residence permit/card, providing any of these items are not more than six months out-of-date.
If you do not have any of these forms of identification, alternative options are available to you. However, this will involve bringing two documents/passes to the test centre (or, in rare circumstances, completing an HS&E Test ID Waiver Form). There are separate identification requirements in place for candidates under the age of sixteen. The CITB’s full list of guidelines relating to ID presentation can be found here.
