Promoting Careers in Surveying

The ConstructionSkills team at Construction Industry Council (CIC) has joined forces with the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) to promote careers in surveying in the Greater London region…

An event aimed at engaging young people in the intricacies of surveying and sustainable development has proved a big with young people and staff from a South London school.

Pupils aged 15 to 18, from the New Vic College and Eastlea Community School in South London attended the introduction to surveying seminar,.

It included presentations by a surveying student as well as practicing surveyors from local consultancies . Pupils were then given a practical task to complete in teams based around the impact of the 2012 London Olympics, a topic which is clearly of high relevance to East London. The practical was followed by a trip to Container City which gave the pupils a chance to learn about the innovative development, which recycles shipping containers and transforms them into affordable office space in an area where land is at a premium.

The Surveying workshop was received very positively by both and staff at the New Vic College and Eastlea Community School, with interest to repeat the workshop for more pupils.

ConstructionSkills, the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust and the RICS also worked together to host a seminar for careers advisors in Greater London in March this year. This seminar demonstrated the diverse range of career opportunities and prospects available to young people within surveying as well as detailing entry routes into the profession. This included both full and part-time university study as well as sponsored apprenticeship opportunities.

Both the surveying workshop for pupils and the seminar for career advisors are to be rolled out throughout England in the next year.
