Input requested for new Land-based and Environmental Diploma

The introduction of a new ‘Diploma’, for young people interested in the environmental and land-based sector will enter a period of consultation in January and February 2007 with a series of events throughout the UK designed to capture input from employers, education providers and other key stakeholders.

ConstructionSkills is one of 5 Sector Skills Councils helping Lantra, the Sector Skills Council for the environmental and land-based sector, develop the new Diploma.

The new Diploma will offer 14-19 year olds a greater choice in the courses, subjects and qualifications they can take combining the best of available qualifications with greater flexibility enabling students to focus on specific areas of interest.

The workshops have been organised to help ensure the qualification reflects the needs of employers and delivers the essential skills, knowledge and work based learning experiences young people need to prepare them for progression in to the world of work or further and higher education.

The series of consultation events offers stakeholders a real opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future for education and skills delivery in the UK. It is hoped the events will attract wide representation, including employers, schools, colleges, parents, young people, awarding bodies and delivery partners.

Regional dates and venues for the Consultation events are as follows:

  • 16 January North East, Hall Garth Golf and Country Club, Darlington, County Durham
  • 17 January North West, Myerscough College, Bilsborrow, Preston, Lancashire
  • 25 January Yorkshire and Humber,  Askham Bryan College, York, Yorkshire
  • 30 January Eastern, British Racing School, Newmarket, Suffolk
  • 6 February West Midlands/East Midland, Warwick Complex, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire
  • 8 February South East, Plumpton College, Lewes, Sussex
  • 20 February South West, Dillington House, Ilminster, Somerset

Consultations will be half-day, morning, events followed by lunch (0945 – 1400). Break-out sessions will allow time to analyse, give opinions and make recommendations on the content of the Diploma.
