The CSCS card programme is an important part of the construction industry. CSCS cards identify a construction worker’s job role, skills, and experience level. Given their importance, most construction companies mandate that all employees own a relevant CSCS card.
Validity periods – a brief overview
All CSCS cards have an expiry date. The validity period of each card is determined by the nature of the role or position it represents.
The types of CSCS cards used by skilled workers, such as the blue and gold variants, are valid for a lengthy duration. This is because the qualifying criteria for blue and gold CSCS cards include passing an NVQ/SVQ (Scotland) qualification and having a significant level of workplace experience. Therefore, blue and gold cardholders have already proven they can work safely and compliantly on a construction site. As a result, they are trusted to deliver an acceptable standard of work for an extended period of time.
Towards the end of their card’s validity period, skilled workers will need to decide whether they wish to renew their membership to the scheme. Some skilled workers may decide to apply for the black CSCS card (otherwise referred to as the managers card), eager to take the next step in their careers. Alternatively, blue card holders may target becoming site supervisors or specialists in their specific fields and, therefore, complete the necessary training to acquire one of the two available gold CSCS cards.
Training cards
Red CSCS cards generally have much shorter validity periods. This is because these cards are used to represent workers in training. There are various red CSCS cards available, with their respective validity periods determined by the owners’ training pathway. The CSCS expects all trainees to complete all training exercises before their red card expires. As a result, red CSCS cards cannot be renewed – if you’ve completed your training, there’s no point renewing a trainee card!
It’s worth noting that white CSCS cards – which are also used by individuals in training – have longer validity periods than red CSCS cards. White CSCS card holders have either attained an advanced qualification from a higher education institution or are already members of an accredited professional body. Therefore, these individuals are likely to target management and senior leadership roles. As a result, white CSCS card holders participate in much more rigorous training programmes than those in possession of red CSCS cards, hence the extended validity periods. As per red CSCS cards, white CSCS cards cannot be renewed.
Learning more about renewing your card
The expiry date of your membership is noted on the front of your CSCS card. If you have an online CSCS account, you can also find this information by logging in to your private portal (more on this to follow).
You have a twelve-month window to renew your card. This window opens six months before your card expires and closes six months after this date. As per the application process, you’ll need to meet a set of qualifying requirements before you can renew your card. Clearly, these qualifying requirements differ depending on the card you are attempting to renew. The more advanced the card scheme, the more challenging the renewal criteria.
The CSCS test – again!
When originally applying for your card, you’ll need to have passed an appropriate CSCS test. This is sometimes referred to as the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) Health, Safety, and Environment Test.
There are three different versions of this assessment; the operatives, specialists, and managers & professionals tests. The test you take is dependent on the type of CSCS card you are applying for. All of these tests are designed to assess whether the candidate’s health and safety knowledge is at a sufficient level to perform tasks associated with a specific CSCS card. For example, if you were applying for a black CSCS card, you’ll need to have passed the managers and professionals test. By passing this assessment, you’ll have demonstrated that you can safely and compliantly deliver managerial duties on a construction site.
As you may remember from submitting your original card application, you must have passed an appropriate CSCS test within the preceding two years. The same rule applies when renewing your card. This is because the CSCS wants to ensure that you have retained safety information relevant to your role. Furthermore, regulatory guidelines and compliance protocols may have changed in the period between acquiring and renewing your card. Only by refreshing your knowledge and re-sitting (and passing!) the test can you be sure that you’re still equipped to work safely and competently.
Other assessments
Some cards require you to pass a ‘Renewal Test’ when renewing your card. As per the inclusion of the CSCS test in the renewals process, a renewal test is designed to assess whether your knowledge is relevant and up to date. However, rather than focusing on health and safety considerations, renewal tests tend to pose questions regarding the technical aspects of your occupation or field of expertise.
As each year passes, industry standards improve, working practices change, and new legislation is introduced. Therefore, the requirements you met when originally applying for your card may have altered considerably by the time you come to renew. Consequently, the renewal test serves an important role in ensuring CSCS card holders remain compliant in their work.
Renewal terms by card
As we’ve already discussed, the renewal terms for each card vary. You must be clear on the renewal terms for your card, as this enables you to prepare accordingly. Remember, there is a strict window for card renewals. Therefore, you’ll need to act fast to ensure you pass any required assessments within this timeframe.
Any delay in renewing your membership may cause considerable inconvenience. Most employers expect you to always carry a valid CSCS card, so you should treat the renewal process as a priority. We would recommend you commence the renewal process approximately two months before the expiry date of your card.
We’ve provided each card’s renewal terms in the tables outlined below. This includes reference to validity periods and qualifying requirements. If you require any further guidance, we would recommend visiting the CSCS’ card types page. Here, you’ll be able to access a full breakdown of details for each card.
Red CSCS cards
Red CSCS cards are used by those undertaking training programmes. There are six red card variants within the CSCS card programme. As referenced previously, none of these cards are eligible to be renewed.
| CSCS Card type | Training status | Validity period | Able to renew? | Renewal requirements | Renewal costs |
| Apprentice card | Individuals enrolled in apprenticeship schemes (either sponsored by an employer or accredited institution) | 4 years & six months | No | N/A | N/A |
| Experienced technical, supervisor, or manager card | Individuals with previous construction industry experience, and are completing an NVQ/SVQ Level 3 (or higher) relating to site supervision, management, or an advanced technical skill. | 3 years | No | N/A | N/A |
| Experienced worker card | Individuals with previous construction industry experience, and are completing an NVQ/SVQ Level 2 (or higher) relating to a technical skill. | 1 year | No | N/A | N/A |
| Industrial Placement card | Individuals undertaking a construction-related qualification or training scheme which mandates a minimum 30-day placement in a workplace environment. This may involve participating in a T-Level course or Trainee Skills Development Programme | 3 years | No | N/A | N/A |
| Provisional card | Individuals that have just entered the construction industry, and are undertaking probationary periods with their employer. This card is designed to provide space for employers to assess the suitability of the individual for work, and the holder to decide whether they want to pursue a career in the construction industry. | 6 months only | No | N/A | N/A |
| Trainee card | Individuals that have registered to complete any construction-related academic, vocational, or professional course. The qualifying requirements for this card overlaps with several others. Therefore, two individuals attempting to obtain the same qualification may hold different red CSCS cards. | 5 years | No | N/A | N/A |
Blue CSCS cards
Blue CSCS cards are used by skilled workers. There are a vast selection of blue cards available, all of which are linked to different trades and disciplines. These are commissioned by subsidiary organizations connected to the CSCS, which regulate specific sectors within the construction industry. For example, the JIB-PMES (Joint Industry Board for Plumbing, Mechanical Engineering Services) are responsible for setting the qualifying requirements for a Plumber Blue CSCS Card.
To qualify for any blue card, you must prove you have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform the duties relating to your specific role. This will have involved completing a relevant NVQ/SVQ Level 2 (or higher) qualification in your chosen field (you may have done this whilst navigating an apprenticeship scheme).
| CSCS Card type | Occupation | Validity period | Able to renew? | Renewal requirements | Renewal costs |
| Skilled worker card | Dependent on your trade/discipline Selected examples:
|
5 years | Yes | Dependent on the type of card.
For example, the CPCS blue card (targeted at plant operatives) includes a Renewal Test in its qualifying requirements. All blue card holders must re-pass the CSCS test. Most blue card renewal applicants will take the operatives version of this assessment, but some will need to sit a relevant module of the specialists test. (e.g. Blind & Shutter Installer blue card applicants will need to take the Working at Height module of the specialists test.) |
Dependent on the type of card.
For example, the renewal cost for a CPCS Renewal Test is £28.00 (this also covers the cost of your new CPCS blue card) |
Gold CSCS Cards
There are two different types of gold CSCS cards: the supervisor and advanced craft cards. Both of these cards have more challenging qualifying requirements than the blue skilled worker card. Applicants must pass an NVQ/SVQ Level 3 (or higher) qualification and demonstrate their proficiency as either a supervisor or technical expert in their craft.
If you’re a gold card applicant – whether making an initial application or renewing your membership – you’ll need to pass either the CSCS operatives or specialists test. The assessment you will take is dependent on the job role you assume/are targeting.
There are twelve different modules within the specialists test. The module you will take will depend on your area of expertise. For example, a Suspended Access Equipment Installer would tackle the Working at Height module of the CSCS specialists test.
| CSCS Card type | Occupation | Validity Period | Able to renew? | Renewal requirements | Renewal costs |
| Supervisor card | Site supervisor | 5 years | Yes | Pass the CSCS specialists test within the two years leading up to your renewal application date | CSCS specialists test: £22.50 |
| Advanced Craft card | Dependent on your trade/discipline.
Selected examples:

White CSCS cards
There are two white CSCS cards available: the Academically Qualified Person (AQP) card and the Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) card. Owning a white CSCS card proves you have advanced technical capabilities, but are yet to master the practical skills relating to a specific discipline or leadership role.
| CSCS Card type | Training status | Validity Period | Able to renew? | Renewal requirements | Renewal costs |
| Academically Qualified Person (AQP) card | Individuals that have passed an advanced construction-related qualification. This could be a degree, HND, HNC, CIOB certificate, or NEBOSH diploma. AQP card holders are likely planning to apply for a black CSCS card within five years of being accepted to the white card scheme. | 5 years | No | N/A | N/A |
| Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) card | Individuals that are a member of a CSCS-approved professional body. These are listed at the bottom of the following page.
PQP card holders are likely planning to apply for a black CSCS card within five years of being accepted to the white card scheme |
5 years | No | N/A | N/A |
Black CSCS card
This is the most advanced card in the CSCS card programme. Therefore, its qualifying requirements are suitably the most challenging. If you plan to apply for a black CSCS card, you must have an NVQ/SVQ Level 4 (or higher) in a construction-related discipline. The black CSCS card is often called the ‘managers’ card, as it is designed for construction site managers and senior leaders.
| CSCS Card type | Occupation | Validity Period | Able to renew? | Renewal requirements | Renewal costs |
| Black CSCS (Manager) card | Selected examples:
|
5 years | Yes | Pass the CSCS managers & operatives test within the two years leading up to your renewal application date.

CSCS managers and professionals test: £22.50 |
The renewal process
The most popular way to renew a CSCS card is by doing so online. To renew your CSCS card online, you’ll need to sign up for a personal CSCS account. As well as being able to renew your CSCS card, you can also apply for new cards using this account. Furthermore, you can track the progress of any card applications, check the expiry date of your membership (as previously mentioned), and access any important updates regarding the CSCS programme. If your card becomes lost, stolen, or damaged, you can also order a replacement via your CSCS account.
The CSCS offers tailored accounts for employers and learning providers. As these stakeholders often organize renewals on behalf of employees and course delegates, these accounts offer the function of submitting multiple applications simultaneously. This function is also available to employers/learning providers when submitting original card applications. If your learning provider offers to make a card/renewal application on your behalf, check beforehand whether there is a charge for this service. As the application process is simple, we would encourage you to avoid incurring any fees.
It’s also possible to renew your CSCS card over the phone. You can do this by calling 0344 994 4777, and discussing your renewal application with a CSCS advisor. Please note that the advisor will ask for your CSCS registration or national insurance number for security purposes. Therefore, ensure you have this information ready before dialling. The CSCS contact centre is open between 8.00am – 6.00pm, Monday to Friday. Lines are closed on bank holidays and weekends.
Turnaround time
After you’ve completed the renewal application process, your card will take approximately 3-10 working days to arrive. Please note that online applications tend to be processed more quickly than those submitted by phone.
If you haven’t received your new card within four weeks of your application date, you should flag this to the CSCS. You can do this by phone or via your personal online account.
How much does it cost to renew my CSCS card?
All CSCS cards cost £36 to renew. This is the same fee you will have been charged when submitting your initial application to your chosen scheme.
Remember, you’ll also need to factor in other costs. Depending on the card you are applying for, you may need to pay for a renewal test. The prices of these vary depending on the membership programme. Of course, all renewal applicants must cover the cost of the CSCS test. Regardless of whether you sit the operatives, specialists, or managers and professionals test, you’ll be charged £22.50 when booking your assessment directly with the CITB.
