Improving Business Performance
The construction industry must significantly improve its performance if it is to compete in the long term. We are providing the business skills and support it needs to grow, and to improve its profitability.
The issue The idea The progress The commitment The results

  • CIC-ConstructionSkills, which represents small professional consultancies, has been raising the issue of skills with its members throughout the UK.
  • CITB NI has significantly increased its budget for grants to employers.
  • CITB-ConstructionSkills increased spending on grants by 16% in 2004, broadening the types of training eligible for financial support, and introducing grants for firms who develop training & development plans or achieve Investor in People (IiP) accreditation.
  • Targeted national campaigns using success-story case studies, are being run with industry federations which have many SME members.
  • We have created agreements with Investors in People UK and the Small Business Service to improve and simplify the offer of advice to construction employers. And we’re looking to work with Constructing Excellence and the Federation of Small Businesses in this area, too.
  • Action plans have been agreed with House Builders Federation, FMB, NFB and CPA to increase training.

As a result of this activity we have seen major increases in the number of businesses investing in training, and a doubling of the number of businesses with training & development plans and Investors in People accreditation.
